Genuis Hour 2.0

L
Look, Listen, Learn

  • what do you wonder about ?
  • how might this benefit others ?

I want to learn about different chemical reactions. I want to learn about chemical reactions because in previous years I have done projects on chemical reactions and I want to put more research into them and learn more about chemical reactions.

A
Ask questions

  • what is it that you need to know about ?
  • brainstorm questions relating to your topic
  • what do you hope to learn through your genius hour work ?

- how do the chemical reactions work ?
- are all chemical reactions safe for kids ?
- how many different chemical reactions is there ?
- is there easy chemical reactions ?
- is there hard chemical reactions ?
- who discovered the chemical reactions ?
- is there a chemical reaction that is really dangerous ?
- is there a chemical reaction that does not use chemicals ?
- is there chemical reactions that could help our planet ?
- is there chemical reactions that could harm our planet ?

Snake Venom Mixed With Human Blood

Image result for snake venom in human bloodImage result for snake venom in human bloodToday we started our second genius hour. It took me a really long time to figure it out, but my new genius hour is going to be learning about chemical reactions and how they work. So my first chemical reaction is snake venom mixed with human blood. So this is what happens. In snake venom, there is a chemical called RVV. This chemical makes human blood start to clot, so your blood starts to clump together. In human blood, there is a chemical called Factor X. Witch also reacts with other proteins in a coagulation cascade. So when the RVV, and the factor X mix together, your blood starts to turn to jelly. But if a snake bites you, there is another chemical in your body called fibrinogen degradition products, witch decreases the amount of fibrin in your blood so that the blood in your body does not turn into jelly. Your blood will only turn into jelly when the blood is not in your body. So that is what happens if you put snake venom in human blood. That is my first day of genius hour. I will continue to learn more chemical reactions and post more of them on my blog throughout the school year!

Elephant Toothpaste

Image result for elephant toothpasteImage result for elephant toothpasteToday I am going to be learning about a chemical reaction called Elephant Toothpaste. This chemical reaction is a warm foam that erupts out of a tube. This is how it works. The yeast in the mixture acts as a catalyst (helper) to decompose the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water. The soap traps the oxygen and creates bubbles and foam. Since it does this very fast the foam is pushed out of tube. So that is the chemical reaction for Elephant Toothpaste. I will continue to learn more chemical reactions and post more on my blog throughout the school year!

Baking Soda Mixed With Vinegar
Image result for baking soda mixed with vinegarImage result for baking soda mixed with vinegarToday I am going to learn why the mixture of baking soda and vinegar explodes when they meet. This is how it works. So in the vinegar there is a chemical called sodium bicarbonate, and in the baking soda there is a chemical called acetic acid. So when the vinegar reaches the baking soda, the sodium bicarbonate in the vinegar reaches apart the acetic acid particles creating a gas. So it pretty much creates an explosion of liquid. If you put a balloon over the bottle (if you use one) you use right after you combine the 2 liquids very quickly, you can blow up the balloon. So that is the chemical reaction for Baking Soda Mixed With Vinegar . I will continue to learn more chemical reactions and post more on my blog throughout the school year!

Mold

Image result for moldImage result for moldToday I am going to be learning how mold forms. So this is how it works. So the mold spores in the mold seak moisture, warmth, and food. The mold spores need those 3 things to grow. So when they find those 3 things they stick to it and continue to grow. The things that mold can grow on are paper, ceiling tiles, cardboard, books, paint, rags, wallpaper, wallboard, household dust, cloth, and food. So that is how Mold grows. I will continue to learn more chemical reactions and post more on my blog throughout the school year!

Acid Keeping Apples From Going Brown
Image result for brown appleImage result for brown appleSo today I am going to be learning why acid keeps apples from going brown. So this is how it works. So when you cut open an apple there is an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase that is released from the apple. This enzyme reacts with the oxygeon. This reaction causes the fruit to turn brown. Lemon juice keeps the apple from going brown because it is full of asboric acid ( also known as vitamin C ). So the oxygen will react to the asboric acid before it reacts to the polyphenol oxidase. So that is how lemon juice keeps apples from going brown. I will continue to learn more chemical reactions and post more on my blog throughout the school year!

Soap Mixed With Milk And Food Coloring
Image result for soap and milk mixed with food colouringSo today I am going to be learning what happens when you mix liquid dish soap with milk and food coloring. So this is how it works. So in milk there is fat molecules, and in liquid dish soap there are soap molecules. So when the 2 mic the fat molecules are twisting and rolling around and the soap molecules race to join the fat molecules. Since the food color molecules are just sitting around doing nothing they get bumped around. So when the food coloring molecules get moved around the color in the milk expands because the food color molecules are being pushed around. But when the soap and the fat molecules mix together they stop bumping around the food color molecules and everything stops. So that is what happens when you mix soap, milk, and food coloring together. I will continue to learn more chemical reactions and post more on my blog throughout the school year!

N
Navigate Ideas

  • generate a concept
  • synthesize the information that you have gathered
So for my big genius hour project I am going to be doing a chemical reaction in front of the class with an additional slide show. But for my slide show I am going to be using Nimbus to record my slide show as a video instead of explaining everything in front of the class, and post it on my blog. I am going to be putting baking soda mixed with vinegar and lemon juice keeping apples fresh on my slide show because I am going to be doing Elephant Toothpaste in front of the class.

C
Create your genius hour project
  • create something to show your learning
So I have made a slide show about all of my chemical reactions that I have made and I am going to be doing a chemical reaction in front of the class. The chemical reaction that I am going to be doing in front of the class is Elephant Toothpaste. I am going to be doing this experiment because it is my favorite experiment and I think that this chemical reaction looks really cool because it is a warm foam exploding out of the bottle and you can make it different colors.
